Copyright and infringement
Working draft · Published for review · 14 October 2026
Foundation and scope
These publication policies are grounded in the nêhiyaw customary-law principles of no-harm, consent, sacred responsibility, truthful witness, reciprocity and restoration, and in cîmân’s understanding of the continuing Treaty No. 6 relationship. They govern the publication’s own conduct and the permissions it may grant. They do not purport to enact law for a Nation, determine another person’s title, or reproduce the full terms of Treaty No. 6. Ref Ref
Reservation of rights
Copyright in original material created by cîmân is reserved to its lawful owner. Contributors retain their rights unless a separate agreement provides otherwise. Photographs, illustrations, recordings, software, trademarks and archival material may belong to third parties and remain subject to the applicable rights and licence conditions. cîmân claims no exclusive ownership of public-domain records, facts, a language, or knowledge belonging to a Nation or community.
Permission to reproduce
Except where an applicable legal exception or an express licence permits the proposed use, prior permission from the relevant rights holder is required to reproduce, republish, adapt, distribute or commercially exploit protected material. Attribution alone does not constitute permission. Permission granted for one use does not extend to another use, medium, recipient or purpose unless expressly stated.
Exceptions and technical measures
These terms do not exclude lawful fair dealing or other applicable statutory exceptions. Users relying on an exception remain responsible for satisfying its requirements, including source and author identification where required. Copy restrictions on this site are a deterrent; their presence or absence does not determine ownership, permission or the lawfulness of a particular use. Ref
Notice of alleged infringement
A notice should identify the claimant and a reply contact; the work or other material concerned; the precise page or asset URL; the right, licence or custodial authority relied upon; supporting documentation; and the remedy requested. Please identify confidential information as such and omit unnecessary personal or sacred particulars. A claim is not treated as established merely because notice is given.
Review and remedy
The publication shall assess notices in good faith and may seek clarification, consult the relevant rights holder or custodian, restrict access pending review, correct attribution, obtain permission, or remove material as the circumstances warrant. Responses shall seek cessation of any established misuse and proportionate restoration. This procedure does not require a claimant to waive other available remedies, nor does it promise an automatic outcome.
